Kalman Saffran Associates to Provide SONET/SDH Solutions To ADC Telecommunications

March 20, 1998, NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)

Leading communications product development firm to supply expertise in video over SONET/SDH to top telecommunications and video transport company

Kalman Saffran Associates (KSA), a leading developer of state-of-the-art products for the data communications, telecommunications and interactive/CATV industries, today announced that it has entered into an agreement to provide ADC Broadband Communications, a division of ADC Telecommunications, Inc., with custom development services. Under the terms of the agreement, KSA will enhance three existing ADC products with SONET/SDH (Synchronous Optical NETwork/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) interfaces.

A team of as many as ten KSA engineers will work with the ADC video distribution products that currently have proprietary optical interfaces. The KSA team will provide circuitry and firmware to convert these proprietary interfaces to SONET/SDH. The SONET/SDH interfaces are needed so that the ADC products have the flexibility to interoperate with the public network and can take advantage of the high bandwidth that SONET/SDH offers.

"Our customers are demanding both SONET and SDH compatible products for applications around the world, and we needed to bring those products to market as quickly as possible," said Wes Simpson, director, digital video business unit, of ADC's Broadband Communications Division. "We chose KSA for this project because of the company's years of experience with both SONET/SDH and video over SONET/SDH. Knowing KSA's distinguished track record, we are counting on them to help us get these products to market ahead of our competition."

"KSA is proud to work with leading companies like ADC to help them meet product development needs," said Kalman Saffran, president and founder of Kalman Saffran Associates, Inc. "As the demand for higher bandwidth and interoperability continues to rise, SONET/SDH is becoming mandatory. KSA is leveraging its 12 years of experience with this complex technology to help leading communications companies meet the growing market need."

Applications emerging from the convergence of telephony and data communications, such as video-on-demand, distance learning, video teleconferencing and other applications with high bandwidth requirements, have created an unprecedented end-user demand for affordable bandwidth. This convergence, coupled with the explosive growth of the Internet and World Wide Web, has ISPs, local and long-distance telephone companies, cable television multiple system operators (MSOs) and Fortune 500 companies turning to SONET/SDH. The worldwide SONET/SDH network provides the ubiquitous standard for high bandwidth (speeds up to 10 Gbps) voice and data transmission. Equipment manufacturers like ADC need to provide products that supply their customers with flexibility that SONET/SDH offers. KSA has extensive experience in these technologies dating back to the establishment of SONET/SDH as an industry standard.

KSA engineers will work with ADC to upgrade three products for the widely deployed DV6000 product line:

-- A standalone unit that accepts any of a variety of ADC encoder cards, then transmits the digital output over a SONET/SDH connection.

-- A standalone unit that receives a signal from a SONET/SDH connection, then provides a user signal output through an ADC decoder card inserted in the standalone unit.

-- An interface card for the DV6000 system that allows a single channel to be dropped from the 16 channels the chassis processes and transmitted over SONET/SDH networks.
